Redemption Project of Washington | How We Help
Due to several recent changes in Washington law, many individuals are headed back to court for a resentencing hearing and a second chance. (See Washington Defender Association summary of resentencing pathways here.) In 2022, in response to the wave of resentencing hearings, the Seattle Clemency Project (SCP), and the Washington Defender Association (WDA), assisted with support from the State Office of Public Defense (OPD), created the Redemption Project of Washington (RPW). RPW is a new pilot project that aims to uplift second chances and to support individuals going back to court for resentencing hearings.
The RPW team provides support for individuals and their public defenders with resentencing cases in Washington in several ways.
For individuals serving a sentence who do not have an attorney:
RPW can review a person’s sentence to assess whether they are eligible for resentencing and which resentencing laws could apply to their case.
If the person is eligible for resentencing, then they are likely eligible to have a public defender appointed to represent them, and RPW can help connect them with a public defender.
If they are not eligible for resentencing, RPW can provide an explanation why the law does not allow relief and can determine whether clemency is a viable alternative.
For individuals represented by a public defender or by assigned counsel:
The RPW team provides support to attorneys and defense teams with preparation for resentencing hearings in Washington. The major areas of support that RPW offers includes:
Individualized case assistance,
Mitigation support,
Release/reentry planning support,
Training, brief bank, expert bank, and other resources defense teams can use in their cases.
